Flow Batteries: New Efforts in R&D

Wednesday, March 23, 2016 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Energy storage plays a critical role in enabling a smarter, more flexible future grid with a high penetration of renewable energy resources. Currently Li-ion battery systems are being employed for short duration storage applications such as frequency regulation, while redox flow systems have been targeted for energy intensive applications. Unlike Li-ion, flow battery systems have a tremendous amount of operational flexibility because the energy and power can be independently controlled. This flexibility enables a single flow battery system to meet the technical requirements for multiple services, enhancing the value proposition for grid scale energy storage.

This webinar features a discussion on: the latest advancements in flow battery technology; recent efforts to demonstrate the multiple benefits flow battery systems can provide; and the path forward for lower cost systems.

Guest Speaker:

  • Wei Wang, Senior Scientist, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

The webinar was hosted by the Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP). ESTAP is managed by the Clean Energy States Alliance, and is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity and Sandia National Laboratories.
