The Value Proposition for Energy Storage at the Sterling Municipal Light Department

Thursday, April 27, 2017 @ 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

The Sterling Municipal Light Department has deployed a 2-megawatt/3.9 megawatt-hour battery storage system that can isolate from the main grid in the event of a power outage and, with an existing PV array, provide up to 12 days of emergency backup power to the town’s police department and emergency dispatch services. In addition to these resiliency benefits, the battery storage system will provide cost savings for both ratepayers and the utility, with an anticipated project payback period of seven years (two years after grants are applied).

Experts at Sandia National Laboratories have prepared an economic analysis of the project including anticipated revenue and cost savings from multiple value streams including capacity reductions, transmission reductions, arbitrage and frequency regulation.

In this webinar, guest speakers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Sterling Municipal Light Department presented the economic case for Sterling’s energy storage system.

Speakers:

  • Imre Gyuk, U.S. Department of Energy – Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability
  • Sean Hamilton, Sterling Municipal Light Department
  • Raymond Byrne, Sandia National Laboratories
  • Todd Olinsky-Paul, Clean Energy States Alliance (Moderator)

The project was supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, with additional financial and technical assistance from the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Electricity under the direction of Dr. Imre Gyuk, Sandia National Laboratories, and Clean Energy States Alliance. Technical support was also provided by Clean Energy Group through a grant from Barr Foundation. Battery installation and commissioning was provided by NEC Energy Solutions.

This webinar was a presentation of the Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP). ESTAP is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity and Sandia National Laboratories, and is managed by the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA).
