Clean Heating and Cooling (CH&C) Calculator

Estimate the cost savings and greenhouse gas reductions from switching to an air source heat pump, ground source heat pump, wood pellet boiler, heat pump/hybrid water heater or solar hot water.

The Clean Energy States Alliance collaborated with state agencies in Connecticut and New York to develop a Clean Heating and Cooling (CH&C) Calculator that homeowners can use to estimate the potential cost savings and greenhouse gas emissions savings from switching all or a portion of their home’s heat from fuel oil, propane, natural gas, or electric baseboard to a CH&C solution.

Click on the links below to visit the state-specific calculator webpages. An introduction to and instructions on how to use the calculator are included in each link below. Please note that some of these tools are password protected while they are under development.

About this Calculator

The CH&C calculator estimates the greenhouse gas emissions savings and the estimated cost savings of investing in a clean heating and cooling technology based on the inputs you provide on your home and its energy use. The tool covers the following space heating and hot water clean energy solutions: air source heat pumps (ducted and ductless), ground source heat pumps, wood pellet boilers, heat pump/hybrid water heater, and solar hot water.

The calculator's results reflect available state-wide incentives. The annual cost savings results reflect the difference between the current annual fuel baseline costs and the CH&C energy costs. The savings are displayed as a dollar amount and as a percent. Simple payback times and net installation costs are calculated.

The annual emissions savings results reflect the difference between the current system's greenhouse gas emissions and any associated with the CH&C technology. These savings are shown as vehicle miles avoided.

Disclaimer

  • The tool is designed to give users an initial estimate of the potential cost savings and greenhouse gas emission savings of installing a Clean Heating and Cooling (CH&C) system. Actual savings will be determined by the design of the specific system, features of the specific home, residents’ energy use, and other variables.
  • We do not guarantee that the savings projected by the tool will be achieved by a specific CH&C installation.
  • Users should not rely on this tool alone when making purchase decisions.

This calculator is designed to be informational and educational only, and when used alone, does not constitute technical advice. We strongly recommend that you seek the advice of a professional before making any type of purchase decision. This model is provided as an initial estimate of potential cost and greenhouse gas emissions savings. The results presented by this calculator are hypothetical and may not reflect the actual savings and costs of your own specific situation, which may vary due to a variety of inputs such as building square footage and configuration, current heat load and system size, current heating system, location, climate zone, and incentives.
